From the Sutta Nipata:
- Padhana Sutta (Sn 3.2) — Exertion. The ten armies of Mara approach the Bodhisatta (Buddha-to-be) in an unsuccessful attempt to lure him from his meditation seat. [New translation.]

[31 January 1999] From the Samyutta Nikaya:
- Nakhasikha Sutta (SN 13.1) — The Tip of the Fingernail.
- Pokkharani Sutta (SN 13.2) — The Pond.
- Samudda Sutta (SN 13.8) — The Ocean. These three suttas offer vivid similes that give a sense of how much suffering one totally puts behind oneself upon attaining the stream to nibbana. Good encouragement for putting some extra effort into the practice.
- [16 January 1999] Handful of Leaves CD-ROM is now out of stock...
...but the good news is that I'll be doing a second printing in February, so you should still be able to get a copy. See the CD-ROM Bulletin for details. -
[1 January 1999] A New Year's gift: Four short suttas from the Samyutta Nikaya:
- Nakhasikha Sutta (SN 20.2) — The Tip of the Fingernail. The Buddha offers a simile for the preciousness of this human birth.
- Okkha Sutta (SN 20.4) — Serving Dishes. Satti Sutta (SN 20.5) — The Spear. Two suttas on the extraordinary power of metta (goodwill).
- Dhanuggaha Sutta (SN 20.6) — The Archer. How quickly life passes! Knowing this, how should we live our lives?
- Ani Sutta (SN 20.7) — The Peg. Be careful: there are many popular teachings nowadays that may sound elegant and pleasing to the ear, but they're not necessarily the Buddha's teachings.
